Do you like them fresh and soft, or stale and hard? Mama has been known to poke a hole in the packaging and store it in a cupboard for a week to harden them up.
I LOVE PEEPS. I like throwing them in the freezer to get them all hard and instantly stale. I work with this other major peep lover, who showed me this article last easter about how peeps are made. I love peeps so much, I remember I wrote a book about a marshmallow's life when I was like, 11. So, anyway, this article was like seeing behind the scenes of my best marshmallow dreams. http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/peeps/sns-peep-factory-pg,0,792513.photogallery
Last Christmas too, Tara and I tried out a recipe for making marshmallows. We also split a bottle of champagne while doing this, and hence, learned a valuable lesson. You cannot load up a french cook press and squeeze out fancy-shaped marshmallows. At least, not after you've had half a bottle of champagne. Good to know.
a long time ago moni and i got the idea to roast peeps in the woodstove like marshmellows. so we stuck them on forks and tried to eat them, but the scalding sugar coating burned our mouths and we never tried that again.
